Abstract

Over the past 10 years, we have come to a greater understanding of the pathogenesis of men who succumb to prostate cancer. One critical aspect is the role of molecular drivers in patients with higher grade disease and the implications in management for both localized and advanced prostate cancer. In order to best manage these patients, the provider needs a basic comprehension of the role and rationale of genetic testing, how to best categorize the various genes involved in prostate cancer development and incorporate this into their practice. This presentation will give the provider a foundation to simplify the complexity and understanding of genomic testing and the role of the urologist.

Learning Objectives:

1. Differentiate Germline vs Somatic Testing.

2. Categorize the genes associated with different DNA repair pathways.

3. Review the different types of genetic mutations and classifications.
