Abstract
With the IR Biotyper®, Dr. Markus Meyer will introduce the audience into the world of FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared) technology and elucidate how it can bring new insights into microorganism strain- and serotyping. The IR Biotyper®, based on FT-IR spectroscopy, can be used in an easy and cost-effective manner, to differentiate microorganisms on the strain level, usually referred to as strain typing.  The features and benefits of the latest software updates will be presented, with classification of strains by Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as a highlight, as well as the software connection between Bruker’s IR Biotyper® and MALDI Biotyper®.

Dr. Maria Pardos de la Gandara will show some preliminary work that her laboratory has performed using FT-IR technology on the study of enteric pathogens such as Salmonella. The French National Reference Centre for E. coli, Shigella and Salmonella aims to test the ability of FT-IR to correctly distinguish Salmonella serotypes, mainly between typhoidal and non-typhoidal serotypes. Secondly, Dr. Pardos de la Gandara and her team aim to put the FT-IR technology to the test in the difficult issue of correctly typing Salmonella Paratyphi B and biotype Java, which has important clinical implications. As a third topic, Dr. Pardos de la Gandara wants to elucidate whether the IR Biotyper is able to discern outbreak isolates from other isolates belonging to the same serotypes.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify how FT-IR enables strain typing between strains with the same "O" antigen
  • Identify how FT-IR helps in the distinction between S. Paratyphi B and biotype Java
  • Identify how FT-IR identifies outbreaks within a population of a particular serotype
  • Illustrate how Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can contribute to classification of serotypes
