From Lab to Production- Scaling Bioprocesses the Smart Way

Speaker

Abstract

Scaling a bioprocess from laboratory experiments to full-scale production is a complex challenge that requires a deep understanding of process dynamics and equipment differences. Traditional scale-up approaches often rely on empirical correlations and trial-and-error, leading to inefficiencies, high costs, and unpredictable performance.

In this talk, we introduce computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a tool for scale-up. SimVantage, a cloud-based simulation platform that enhances bioprocess development by integrating mechanistic modeling with experimental data will be shown as an example for a modern and easy-to-use CFD program. The SimVantage scaling tool enables a systematic approach to scale-up by predicting process behavior across different scales, identifying potential bottlenecks, and optimizing critical parameters before experimental validation.

Attendees will learn how mechanistic models can be used to capture key bioprocess characteristics, such as mass transfer, metabolic activity, and mixing effects, and how these models can be leveraged to de-risk scale-up decisions. We will also discuss case studies demonstrating how SimVantage improves process efficiency, accelerates development timelines, and reduces the need for extensive laboratory experimentation. By the end of this session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how simulation-driven scale-up strategies can enhance robustness and reproducibility in bioprocessing.

Learning Objectives:

1. Summarize the challenges of bioprocess scale-up.

2. Discuss how mechanistic modeling enhances process development.

3. Apply simulation-driven approaches to improve scale-up success.
