Acupuncture and vitamin D as a holistic treatment for side effects of hormone therapy in cancer patients

WRITTEN BY: Greta Anne

Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are a cornerstone in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. These medications, by reducing estrogen levels, significantly lower the risk of cancer recurrence and improve overall survival rates. However, a notable side effect of AIs is joint pain and stiffness, which can be debilitating and lead to non-compliance with the treatment regimen. This non-compliance, in turn, potentially increases the risk of cancer recurrence. Recent research published in Cancer from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA explores an intervention to alleviate AI-associated joint pain through the combined use of acupuncture and vitamin D supplementation.

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, has been increasingly recognized for its potential in pain management. It involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, which is believed to enhance the body's natural painkillers and increase blood flow. Vitamin D, on the other hand, is essential for bone health and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to pain reduction.

The randomized, controlled trial involved 200 participants who were experiencing significant joint pain attributed to their AI therapy. Participants were divided into four groups: one receiving acupuncture and vitamin D, one receiving acupuncture and a placebo, one receiving sham acupuncture and vitamin D, and a control group receiving sham acupuncture and a placebo.

Participants in the acupuncture and vitamin D group reported a significant reduction in joint pain compared to those in the other groups. This group also exhibited improved mobility and a better overall quality of life. The combination of acupuncture and vitamin D appeared to have a synergistic effect, providing greater pain relief than either intervention alone. The combination therapy did not present any significant adverse effects, suggesting that it could be a viable option for a broader patient population.

Dr. Weidong Lu highlighted the importance of managing side effects in ensuring adherence to cancer treatment protocols. "By managing side effects, our approach makes it easier for patients to continue their prescribed medication, which has the potential to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and improve long-term outcomes for breast cancer survivors," said Dr. Lu to MirageNews.

This approach not only improves patients' quality of life but also enhances their ability to adhere to essential cancer therapies, ultimately contributing to better long-term outcomes. As the medical community continues to seek ways to mitigate the side effects of cancer treatments, integrative strategies like this offer promising solutions for comprehensive patient care.
