According to a study from the University of Colorado, runners who use cannabis before or during their performance get a huge benefit related to the cannabis producing endorphins in the user. Using cannabis, within moderation, can make a runner’s workout less tedious and boring, and even mimic a runner’s high: The body naturally produces cannabinoid-like brain chemicals after a period of exercise, making the making the person feel more euphoric and alert. CBD and THC can help enhance and prolong these feelings, making for a longer, more productive run.
Runners report additional positive benefits from cannabis usage when it comes to cooling down after a workout. Cannabis can help with relaxation, reduce inflammation, and help the user avoid the side effects that come with ingesting traditional pain relievers. Taking aspirin or ibuprofen can cause stomach upsets or aggravate GI issues – issues that don’t exist with CBD usage.
Additionally, CBD can be an effective topical treatment for runners before, during, or after a workout. Applying CBD salves to joints can reduce pain and inflammation, resulting in better performance and better overall joint health.
Other runners report better focus when ingesting THC infused edibles prior to a run; being able to single-mindedly stay on task in a way that wouldn’t be possible for them otherwise.
Of course, there are potential downsides that come with ingesting too much cannabis. Overdoing it can result in lethargy, lack of motivation, or fatigue, not to mention lung issues that can result from too much smoking or vaping. Moderation is the watchword for the best overall results.
