Israeli tech company Leviticus Cardio has created a unique system that allows for wireless charging of a ventricular assist device (VAD). Previously VADs charged via a power cord that runs from the device through a hole in the patient’s abdomen. This is cumbersome for patients who frequently have to recharge at an outlet or via an external battery. There’s also a risk of infection where the charging cord meets the body.
This new technology charges electromagnetically through a wearable vast, allowing patients to be wire free. The battery on these new devices lasts about eight hours for a single charge.
A wrist monitor connected to the device alerts the users to issues like a low battery. There’s also an internal vibration alarm to warn of low battery or serious malfunction.
If the wireless charging system were to fail, a wired charge is also available. Luckily, Ismail Tursunov, a 24-year-old patient using the device, reports not having needed to use the wired charging back-up even once since his devices implantation.
