The CRISPR/Cas system is an adaptive prokaryotic immune system which allows bacteria to inhibit viral infection. In 2012, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier were the first to utilize the CRISPR-Cas9 system as a genome-editing tool. Repurposing the CRISPR machinery as a genome-editing tool revolutionized scientific research and medicine. The system is simple precise and very efficient. It can be utilized on living cells and on any type of DNA which made it a preferred method of choice. With endless possibilities of use the CRISPR-Cas9 fuels the gene editing “craze”. Here is a summary of CRISPR-Cas9 milestones and applications that continue to shape the scientific world.
