Simple, paper-based test for Ebola

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a paper-based test for Ebola, dengue, and yellow fever. The technology is similar to a home pregnancy test and uses colored nano-particles to distinguish each virus. Researchers demonstrated that the test could identify viral proteins from blood samples. They plan to distribute the components to resource-poor regions where the tests can be assembled and used on-site.

The team, led by Kimberly Hamad-Schifferli, Ph.D., will present their work at the 250th National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society.
