The frequency of great white shark attacks is thought to be over-estimated by a magnitude of 10 to 100 times, but despite what any shark expert wants to tell you, there’s always the real danger that a shark could spontaneously attack a person in close proximity.
Researchers are working hard for an effective way to deter shark attacks, and one of the most promising methods appears to be a concept called the Shark Shield, which exploits a shark’s innate ability to perceive electromagnetic fields from living organisms around them.
The Shark Shield works by disturbing this electromagnetic field in a manner that scientists describe as “annoying to the shark.” Think of it as a loud speaker that suddenly starts blaring in your ear – it won’t hurt you, but it’s sure to make you turn the other way.
The researchers tested this technology with tasty tuna bait and witnessed impressive results. Without the Shark Shield technology, sharks pursued the tuna about 96% of the time; but with the Shark Shield technology, sharks only pursued the tuna about 40% of the time.
Coupled with an experienced diver that recognizes the best practices for staying safe around wild sharks, the Shark Shield could potentially eliminate the chance of a shark attack. Cool, eh?
