How can artificial intelligence (AI) help in improving radiology methods throughout the healthcare industry? This is what a recent study published in Radiology: Artificial Intelligence hopes to address as a team of medical professionals investigated several considerations, including the cultural and regulatory aspects, regarding the use of AI in radiology. This study holds the potential to help researchers, medical professionals, and patients make the best-informed decisions regarding medical treatment throughout the healthcare industry.
The study involves expert panel and seminar insights from the Radiological Society of North of America (RSNA) and the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) Society regarding the moral and technical benefits and challenges of implementing AI in radiology. The study notes how collaboration is key for establishing protocol regarding the use of AI in radiology, specifically through sharing data regarding machine learning models, cloud computing, along with the necessary infrastructure. Additionally, the authors discuss the financial benefits towards hospitals to invest in AI-based software that will decrease burnout and encourage medical professionals to use AI, as well.
“This report explores the views of leading experts to understand how best to deploy AI tools into clinical radiology practice,” said Dr. Marius George Linguraru, Connor Family Professor for Research and Innovation at the Children's National Hospital and lead author of the study. “AI tools can play a key role in radiology, but radiologists must be able to trust in the systems’ design and receive adequate training. As the physicians most familiar with these tools, radiologists should establish clear guidelines regarding clinical accountability.”
This study comes as the use of AI throughout the healthcare industry continues to take hold, with AI being used for disease diagnosis, medical documentation, drug discovery and development, and improved administrative activities.
How will AI help improve radiology in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
