We all have bone marrow, a substance that can be found at the core of our living bones. Inside bone marrow, we can find a number of things, including stem cells.
If you didn't know already, stem cells are very valuable cells because they can transform into other kinds of cells that make up the human body. This makes them versatile and very useful for treating health issues.
You may have heard of a thing called a bone marrow transplant, which is where the stem cells from bone marrow are used to help encourage the growth of new healthy cells in a number of situations, such as after a cancer surgery.
Stem cells can be taken from your own bone marrow, which is preferred, but can also be donated from close relatives with similar genetic makeup, or from newborn baby umbilical cords. Once taken, they can be injected into the site where new cells are needed, and they can get to work.
There is also a such thing as a bone marrow donor, which is somebody who donates bone marrow. No worries though, bone marrow can regenerate in as little as two months, so it's almost like having an infinite supply.
