Batteries That You Can Stretch?

WRITTEN BY: Anthony Bouchard

Modern rechargeable batteries come in all shapes and sizes, but one general rule applies: don't bend, puncture, or expose that battery to heat, or an explosive ball of fire could result in injuries.

This kind of rigid battery technology powers your smartphones, tablets, and even your laptops; but if wearable technology is to progress further, we need something a little more versatile that doesn't come with these dangers when bent or stretched.

That's why researchers are working on new battery technologies that can be safely bent or stretched without the dangers of fires or explosions. These batteries would be perfect for a future of sensor-laden band aids, or perhaps smart clothing.

While such batteries are already in testing, they're not quite ready for everyday technology just yet. We're still a few years away from incorporating such battery technology into our daily lives, which gives researchers time to fine-tune their designs and better understand their mechanics and stress levels.
