In fecal microbiota transplantation, poo is actually used as a medicine. Sometimes applied as a last resort, it is used by some clinics only in the case of patients with C. difficile (C. diff) infections. Learn more about this treatment from the video.
C. diff is a dangerous pathogenic bacterium, which can cause chronic diarrhea. People can die from the infection, which often sets in after a person takes antibiotics. Those drugs wipe out the beneficial bacteria in the gut, and C. diff takes advantage of the situation. But after receiving the therapy, in which microbes are extracted from a poop sample taken from a healthy donor, patients can be cured of the infection.
