Artificial sweeteners can be found in many different foods; the objective is to reduce the caloric content of foods while keeping them sweet. They may not be so good for your body though. Some studies have suggested that synthetic sweeteners cause our bodies to react in the same way that they would to regular sugar, while others have shown that our brains can tell the difference.
The effects of artificial sweeteners are not only felt in the brain. Some of these chemicals are meant to pass through the body undigested. That means they end up sticking around in the intestines, where gut bacteria may end up metabolizing them. That can eventually cause insulin resistance, just as if sugar to much had been consumed.
