Listeria Infections Linked to Deli Ham

WRITTEN BY: Carmen Leitch

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has some advice about a ham recall announced on October 3 by Johnston County Hams, Inc. in Smithfield, North Carolina. They have a list of ready-to-eat meats sold by the company that you should not eat.

The contamination is caused by a strain of Listeria monocytogenes. So far, four people have been hospitalized, and one death has been reported.

Listeria infection can cause different symptoms in various people. They can include muscle aches, headache, and loss of balance. It is particularly dangerous to a developing fetus, however. When pregnant women are infected, it can lead to many problems, including stillbirth or miscarriage.
