Globally, Many Students Are Over-Diagnosed With ADHD

When teachers notice issues with a student, parents naturally respond and often can lead to a diagnosis of ADHD. Now, a global study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Child Psychiatry has concluded their research findings that many clinicians are mistakenly diagnosing students with ADHD according to what they perceive to be the symptoms. Diagnosis of ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is made primarily on reports between teachers and parents based on a child’s behavior. These behavioral symptoms may include fidgeting, interpreting, and an inability to focus however, this not always indicative of ADHD. The authors hope that there study can bring awareness and allow teachers and parents to be cautious when assessing a child’s behavior.
