Scientists at Scripps Research Institute are trying to learn more about the way our immune system works. Specifically, they want to learn more about the role one gene plays, and how it might be harnessed to help treat disease.

The lab of Linda Sherman, a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbial Science, has already been investigating this gene, PTPN22, for some time. They have found that it helps control how the immune system works, and went on to reveal its regulatory role in viral infections.
