Massachusetts opened its first dispensaries for legal recreational marijuana sales today. The companies, one called Cultivate Holdings in Leicester and another called New England Treatment Access (NETA) in Northampton, were both originally medical marijuana dispensaries. They will be the first legal recreational marijuana sales in the eastern half of the United States. MA is now the seventh state to open recreational marijuana dispensaries.
The Massachusetts state law is clear: no one under 21 will be legally able to buy or use recreational marijuana. Customers are required to show a valid, government-issued ID to show their age before they are even allowed to enter a dispensary.
Nonetheless, thousands of people gathered today amidst the cold and precipitation to partake in the historic day.
