Human Urine as Fertilizer?

Although at first it may sound unappealing, human urine could be a key asset in sustainable agriculture research particularly for its unique contribution. Urine contains the same nutrients found in fertilizers, such as nitrogen and phosphorus—the nutrients are crucial in producing energy. Thus, instead of being flushed down the toilet—urine could be utilized for a unique contribution. With support from the National Science Foundation, investigators from a multidisciplinary research team at the University of Michigan will examine the unique properties of urine as an agricultural fertilizer.
