Fifteen-year-old environmental justice activist Greta Thunberg from Sweden took the climate talks at the COP24 summit by the horns with her barely over three-minute speech which she gave in front of the United Nations representatives.
"You are not mature enough to tell it like is," she said. "Even that burden you leave to us children. But I don't care about being popular. I care about climate justice and the living planet." Thunberg also led a school walkout earlier in the week in order to encourage adults to take action on climate justice. Schools around the globe followed suit in similar walkouts, with more than 10,000 students walking out of classes in Australia.
The COP24 summit ended late Saturday night after two weeks of high-strung negotiations failed to conclude any serious commitments from the almost 200 nations represented. Leaders were aiming to reach green finance commitments that would take significant action to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-Industrial levels.
