Hamsters are often used as model organisms for basic laboratory research. Often times taking their pulse is crucial for basic lab practices and experiments. However, this can lead to animal stress that deviates results. Now, researchers took RFID inspired technology which is regularly used to track goods in a warehouse, for the measuring of vital signs such as breathing and pulse. This technique can also be used in other small animals such as turtles, fish, and birds. The technology insures that animals will not be shaved or sedated which generally increases their stress levels, and to receive basic veterinary care.
