NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this intense footage of a large prominence erupting in a wing-like pattern on April 21, 2015. A solar prominence is gaseous bloom extending outward from the Sun's surface, sometimes looping around. Prominences originate from and are attached to the Sun's surface in the photosphere, and extend off the Sun into the corona.
