Settling in for a nice glass of wine, or relaxing with a cold beer? While some studies have shown that the properties of wine can be beneficial and others have linked beer consumption to a lower risk of dementia, the sad truth is that alcohol is likely to be the cause for seven different kinds of cancer. In a study published in the journal Addiction, a meta-analysis of several studies showed that booze was the cause of breast, colon and liver cancer. Evidence also links it to throat cancer, prostate, skin and pancreatic cancer.
The amount of drinking matters however. Heavy drinkers had the highest risk. There was also no safe amount found, so researchers concluded that any amount could raise the risk for cancer. Data for this study came from the World Cancer Research Fund as well as the World Health Organization.
