captureLabRoots is excited to announce Reshmi Ranjith as the winner of the LabRoots Fall STEM scholarship, awarding her $2,000 to support her in her academic pursuits in the STEM fields. The 2017 fall scholarship was open to a worldwide audience of students, and LabRoots welcomed the  hundreds who applied from all over the world. While all of the applicants were excellent examples of students seeking to promote science and mathematics, Ranjith stood out with such passion and dedication to her scientific path. photo-2Reshmi Ranjith is a senior at Westhill High School, and plans on attending Georgia Institute of Technology next fall, majoring in computer science. She has won the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award, priding herself on her originality and ability to help others. While initially falling into computer science on accident, the process of understanding, applying, and debugging code became one of her favorite activities. Reshmi describes computer science as not a science at all, but more like art and language combined. Computer science provides freedom and creativity, essentially offering another way to express oneself. With an interest in the relevancy and recent advances in artificial intelligence, Reshmi sees AI relying on big data to provide it with information leading developments in AI and Data Science to go hand in hand. Reshmi is a part of her school’s National Honors Society and volunteers at the local library and at Random Hacks of Kindness hackathons, where elementary and middle schoolers are taught the basics of computer science. She has also been the co-president of the Girls Who Code club for two years, where she promotes the club and helps the members learn the fundamentals of computer science, and participates in the Future Business Leaders of America club. LabRoots has seen great success in the first year of the scholarship program and is excited to see it continue in 2018. We wish all of our winners great success! Those interested in applying for the Spring 2018 STEM Scholarship can apply after the application period opens March 1, 2018, on the LabRoots site here.
