Congratulations to the LabRoots STEM Scholarship Winner!

We at LabRoots are happy to present the winner of the Spring 2017 LabRoots Scholarship! This scholarship supports undergraduate or graduate students with funding for research projects, travel expenses, and training supplies associated with their academic pursuits in one of the STEM fields. The LabRoots Scholarship funds one student for one year, providing $3,000 in direct costs for project supplies and travel. Congratulations to Sarah Robbins, a third-year graduate student at Johns Hopkins Medical School! Sarah joined the lab of David Valle to find the cause of rare genetic diseases and is currently working to understand the etiology of a new bone disorder. Sarah also writes for OMIM and the Biomedical Odyssey blog at Johns Hopkins. Upon graduation, her goal is to bring scientific discoveries to the public as a Science Writer or Science Policy advocate. "Thank you so much to LabRoots for this scholarship! As a young scientist, it is so encouraging to have support of the community during my training," said Sarah Robbing. "I can’t wait to share my research with my colleagues at scientific meetings as I continue my graduate studies.” Sarah sets a wonderful example for other students looking to pursue careers in STEM. As an aspiring writer and policy advocate, Sarah can join those who help instill scientific interest in the public and rally support for STEM in schools. Sarah plans to use this scholarship to participate in the 2017 American Society of Human Genetics meeting taking place on October 17-21 in Orlando, Florida. At this year’s ASHG meeting, Sarah will have the opportunity to connect with fellow collaborators from across the United States, to learn about the latest technologies in the fast-paced world of genome sequencing, and to experience platform talks and poster presentations by scientists from around the world.
