Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a condition occurring when germs no longer respond to the drugs that should kill them. In the case of bacterial microbes, AMR develops when antibiotics are no longer effective in fighting off the infection. When AMR occurs, alternative drugs are required to eliminate infection. Bacteriophages are viruses capable of infecting bacteria and then replicating inside the bacterial host. Some bacteriophages can be used to infect and kill bacteria, providing an alternative to antibiotics when AMR occurs.
