Cocktail party effect is an occurrence where the brain effectively filters out outside stimuli in order to concentrate auditory focus. The selective attention of the brain's sensory memory is due to the ability to process and differentiate multiple stimuli and then focus on the most important one, essentially blocking out the others. Part of the common phenomenon is being able to hear and identify one's name being spoken despite being in a loud environment.
