An intensive care unit (ICU) is an area of a hospital or healthcare facility that specializes in caring for patients with critical illnesses who may have, or be recovering from, a life-threatening condition. Patients requiring intravenous medication, such as sedatives or pain killers, while in the ICU may require care by an anesthesiologist.
