Liposomes are small vesicles made from the same material as the cell membrane which are used to deliver drugs or nutrients throughout the body. To generate liposomes with optimal shelf-life, they can be freeze dried, also known as lyophilized. Freeze drying dehydrate the liposome by removing all traces of water resulting in a powdery, dry substance which can be easily transported and stored. The lyophilized liposome is re-hydrated, also called reconstituted, with water prior to administration.
