How many Americans uses cannabidiol (CBD) and how many are marijuana users? This is what a recent study published in Preventive Medicine Reports hopes to address as a researcher from Biola University investigated CBD use among Americans, and specifically marijuana use. This study has the potential to help researchers, medical professionals, legislators, and the public better understand CBD use and how it could influence medical decisions.
For the study, Dr. Ji-Yeun Park, who is an associate professor of public health at Biola University and sole author of the study, conducted a comprehensive data survey obtained from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) to ascertain CBD and marijuana use among Americans. In the end, Dr. Park found that the NSDUH reported 10.5 percent of Americans had use CBD within the past month, with the numbers being higher among those who also stated they used marijuana during the past month. For example, 40.7 percent of current CBD users also reported using marijuana, as opposed to 5.09 percent of non-marijuana users.
The study concluded, “CBD use was commonly reported among people who use marijuana. Public health initiatives targeting individuals who use marijuana are crucial for educating them about the potential benefits and risks of CBD use, as well as the safety of using CBD in conjunction with marijuana.”
This study comes as 46 out of 50 states have at minimum legalized CBD use in some form, with 4 states still listing marijuana or CBD as fully illegal, and 7 states allowing CBD with THC only, and 22 states having fully legalized marijuana use entirely.
How much will CBD use among Americans increase in the coming years and decades? Only time will tell, and this is why we science!
As always, keep doing science & keep looking up!
