The USDA announced that Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, LLC has recalled about 147,276 pounds of its ground raw turkey products because of suspected contamination with Salmonella. So far, there have been 164 reported cases of illness in 35 states that are thought to be linked with the ground turkey, according to the announcement.
Salmonella can cause a common foodborne illness called salmonellosis. Most people who become infected can recover on their own without treatment. The illness usually lasts for about a week and causes diarrhea and cramping that’s typical of gastrointestinal distress. The symptoms can become severe, however.
If you have purchased any of the recalled products, which include one pound packages of seasoned and unseasoned ground turkey, you are advised to throw it away and to thoroughly clean any surfaces that the product may have come into contact with. Consumers and cooks are also reminded to cook raw meat to the proper temperature (for poultry products, that's 165º), keep it separate from other food products, and to keep hands and surfaces clean.
