John P. Wyatt, M.D.
This fellowship honors Dr. John P. Wyatt, M.D., who was director of the University of Kentucky Tobacco and Health Research Institute from 1974 until January 1980. Dr. Wyatt was a pathologist who received his M.D. from the University of Manitoba in 1938 and completed his medical training on a fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Before coming to UK in 1974, he was professor and head of the departments of pathology at the University of Manitoba and St. Louis University where he was involved in black lung research. Dr. Wyatt was a pulmonary diseases researcher who published over 100 articles covering viruses and diverse lung injuries. The John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship is awarded biennially.
Dr. Erin Haynes, 2020 John. P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship Awardee, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology in the UK College of Public Health, Interim Chair of the Department of Prevention Medicine and Environmental Health, and Interim Deputy Director of the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences.

Join us as we hear from KEYNOTE speaker Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, on “Planetary Health: Human Well-Being on a Fast-Changing Planet.” Howard Frumkin, an internist, occupational and environmental medicine specialist, and epidemiologist, is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, where he served as Dean from 2010 to 2016.
After Dr. Howard Fumkin's presentation, a Panel will present on "Environmental health disparities at the national, regional, and local level" and breakout sessions (available at 2:05pm EDT and at 2:25pm EDT) showcasing environment research and action will follow!
The John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship 2021 Symposium honors the legacy of Dr. John Wyatt, a pulmonologist who over 50 years ago connected environment with disease. His pioneering environmental clinical research will be honored on Earth Day.
