Abstract
Prior to 2022, monkeypox virus was a rare cause of disease in humans with most cases being associated with travel to the continent of Africa or contact with animals from Africa. However, monkeypox is currently causing the largest outbreak in recorded history, with nearly 80,000 confirmed cases worldwide. In this presentation, the epidemiology of monkeypox virus will be discussed, including a review of prior outbreaks and key routes of transmission. In addition, the clinical features of monkeypox virus disease will be highlighted, with emphasis on how the variety in disease manifestations may contribute to ongoing transmission. Finally, participants will learn about the laboratory methods that should be used to help establish a diagnosis of monkeypox virus infection.
