Abstract

Interest in psychedelics has surged, driven in part by their potential therapeutic applications. However, the mechanisms underlying these benefits remain debated. One perspective, the metaphysical belief model, suggests that psychedelics improve well-being by inducing comforting supernatural beliefs following mystical experiences. By contrast, the predictive self-binding model argues that psychological insights, rather than metaphysical shifts, drive therapeutic outcomes. In this talk, I will present findings from a quantitative content analysis of 240 unsolicited psychedelic experience reports from Erowid.org. Using structural equation modeling, we tested the relationships between ego dissolution, therapeutic intent, psychological insight, metaphysical belief changes, and long-term health outcomes. Our results indicate that psychological insight uniquely predicts beneficial outcomes, fully mediating the effects of ego dissolution and therapeutic intent. In contrast, altered metaphysical beliefs did not significantly contribute to these benefits. These findings provide empirical support for the predictive self-binding model, highlighting the critical role of psychological insight in psychedelic therapy.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the predictive self-binding model and how it differs from the metaphysical belief model in understanding psychedelic benefits.

2. Analyze the role of psychological insight in mediating the effects of ego dissolution and therapeutic intent on long-term health outcomes.

3. Evaluate empirical findings from structural equation modeling of psychedelic experience reports to assess the impact of metaphysical belief changes on therapeutic benefits.
