Ceramides are lipid molecules made up of an amino alcohol known as a sphingosine and a fatty acid. Ceramides are the major component of sphingomyelin, a lipid located in the cell membrane of eukaryotic cells. Because ceramides hold skin cells together, they help to keep skin moisturized and protect it from external assaults and aggressors. Because of their benefits in skin care, ceramides can be found in commercial face creams.
